Understanding Cold Air Intakes

What is cold air intake?

Cold air intakes move the air filter outside of the engine compartment so that cooler air can be sucked into the engine for combustion. A cold air intake is installed outside the engine compartment, away from the heat created by the engine itself. That way, it can bring in cooler air from outside and direct it into the engine. The filters are usually moved to the upper wheel well area or near a fender where there is more access to free-flowing, cooler air and less hot air from the engine. Since hot air from the engine will rise, the lower placement also captures the coolest, densest air possible.Cooler air is denser, so it brings more oxygen into the combustion chamber, and that means more power.

2.How does a cold air intake work?

Oxygen is present in the air that surrounds your vehicle, but the enclosed nature of your hood prevents it from easily getting into your combustion chambers. The air intake is simply duct-work that allows the engines vacuum to pull air into the engine to mix with fuel and be fired.

A cold air intake moves the intake point farther away from the engine, so it sucks in cooler air. Some of them also include a high-temperature shield to further reduce the heat radiating from your internal parts. By removing the air box , reducing restriction in the ducting, and getting rid of the low-quality paper filter, you create an intake that can flow more air per minute to the engine.

3.Benefits of A Cold Air Intake.

*Increased oxygen flow can net you between 5 and 20 horsepower depending on your engine and the product you buy.

*Cold air intakes can also provide better throttle response and improved fuel economy. When your engine has the ability to get more air, it has the ability to create more power.

*Don’t have to replace it every 15,000 miles. the filters available for cold air intakes can be removed and washed to clean them.

*It can be installed relatively easily. It’s designed as a bolt-on modification, which means that it can be installed without having to make any significant changes to your vehicle.

4.Cold Air Intake Installation Considerations.

*The air filter can be positioned far away from engine heat (especially the hot exhaust manifolds), or in front of the radiator, or down low so it can pull in air that has not been heated by the engine or radiator.

*If a Cold Air Intake system positions the air filter inside the engine compartment, it should have a metal or plastic heat shield to deflect engine and exhaust heat away from the filter.

*To buy a Cold Air Intake system that is specifically designed for your vehicle, and includes a heat shield to keep engine and exhaust heat away from the air filter and support brackets for a secure and vibration-free mounting.

5.Cold Air Intake            FAQ.

1)Q:Do cold air intakes increase horsepower?

A:Some manufacturers claim as much as a 5- to 20-horsepower increase for their system. But if you team up the cold air intake with other engine modifications, like a new exhaust, you’ll create a much more efficient system.

2)Q:Can cold air intake damage your engine?

A:If the air filter is too exposed and sucks up water, it’ll go straight into your engine and you’ll be up a creek. Look into adding a bypass valve to keep this from happening.

3)Q:How much does a cold air intake cost?

A:Cold air intakes are a fairly inexpensive modification (typically a few hundred dollars) and easier to install than most other engine modifications.

4) Q:Are cold air intakes worth it?

A:Install that cold air intake and hear the magnificent sound of free-flowing cool air to your engine — and enjoy a few extra horsepower as well. It may be just what your engine needs.
